National Outreach and Engagement – Transforming the Way We Connect
The Canada Science and Technology Museum has a national mandate. It reaches out across Canada to engage about 7 million people from all regions of our vast country. In partnership with other museums, science centres and other institutions, the Museum develops travelling exhibitions that are hosted in different parts of the country. The Museum also acts as a distributor, bringing together the stories of science and technology from different parts of Canada to the National Capital Region.
While exhibitions happen in space, programs happen in time. Museum staff and volunteers not only deliver programs on-site but also nationally through a structured series of programs planned to reach different audiences. The Museum also develops EduKits that are loaned to educators throughout Canada.
The Internet provides the perfect medium for bringing Museum programming to Canadians across the country and around the world. The Museum web site connects users to the national collection, lesson plans, curriculum guides and an online library with access to the other library collections.
The web site is evolving into a social networking place for like minds involved in one or more of the Museum's national programs. The Museum is engaged as a resource, as a social networking place for like minds involved in programs, and as a data recording site supporting specific programs, and is extending its activity in social networking sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The new Museum web site will offer distance learning and allow children of all ages to create their own experiences.
